Where are our services available?
Australia wide online telehealth or in person in our Brighton, Melbourne clinic (Victoria).
*Our psychiatrists can make prescriptions for all states except for Tasmania (state regulations). For patients in Tasmania we recommend you see a local practitioner where possible, or if you wish to be seen by us, the psychiatrist can provide diagnosis, and advise medication which your GP would need to agree to prescribe for any diagnoses given. We recommend you speak to your GP about this in advance to ensure they agree to this.
What is involved in an autism assessment?
Our doctors and psychologists use only evidence-based ASD assessment with a focus on neuroaffirming delivery using a range of tools depending on the age of the person and the clinician’s approach these include: ADOS, ADI-R, MIDGAS, CARS.
For autism assessments we ask that you involve a parent, foster carer, grandparent or other “childhood informant” such as a childhood friend or sibling in your assessment, to help us understand your features in childhood.
You can decline to involve someone who knew you well as a child, but some support services relevant if a diagnosis is made such as NDIS require this.
What is involved in an ADHD assessment?
Our doctors and psychologists use only evidence based ADHD assessment tools with a focus on a neuroaffirming delivery, depending on the age of the person and the clinicians approach such as: the Connors, the DIVA, the QB check.
For ADHD assessments we ask that you involve a parent, foster carer, grandparent or other “childhood informant” such as a childhood friend or sibling in your assessment, to help us understand your features in childhood. You can decline to involve someone who knew you well as a child, however, please note if an ADHD diagnosis is made, to access PBS rebates on ADHD scripts, the PBS requires “childhood” collateral was given at assessment. Therefore those who do not provide a childhood informant may have to pay for private scripts.
Please kindly note this is not within the control of kin.clinic, but is a PBS Australia wide regulation.
Do you offer bulk billing?
Bulk Billing is not routinely offered. In circumstances where someone is unemployed and can show evidence of job seeking and financial hardship, this may be considered. Please email us at pm@kinclinic.com.au with evidence, and we can let you know if any doctors are available to offer reduced rates.
What to expect from psychiatry sessions?
Psychiatrists are medical doctors who have gone through full medication training and rotations in aspects of medicine, before opting to specialise in mental health. They are trained in the diagnosis of conditions and prescription of specialist medications to help these conditions. Their consults will tend to focus on understanding your health, your reaction to medications, and aiming to titrate you on the correct medication. Psychiatrists often take notes on their computers to record your responses.
Every psychiatrist will have their own unique approach, but if you have never been to a Psychiatry appointment to give you an idea they are often similar to GP consults typically in style. Some psychiatrists choose to train in additional talking therapies, but many do not provide this.
