At Kin Clinic, our assessments are evidence-based and delivered in a supportive way.
Below is a simple step-by-step guide to how all our different assessments work and the process they follow.
About Autism Assessment
We provide evidence-based Autism Assessment with expert Neurodiversity Psychiatrists and Psychologists for adults and children in 4 simple steps:
Step 1: Referral
Please obtain a GP referral. Read here about the referral requirements.
Step 2: Book
Once you have your referral, you can book here or call us to book with one of our psychologists or psychiatrists. You can choose your own clinician and opt for in-person or online options.
Step 3: Prepare
You will be sent an intake form & some questionnaires to provide your clinician with some history. In the intake forms you will be asked to provide (if available to you) 2-6 school reports and any previous psychological or mental health assessments.
For under 18s you must please attend with a guardian.
For adults, if possible, please make arrangements to bring a parent, carer, family friend or sibling who knew you in childhood to your appointment. We also understand that this isn’t possible for many people, in which case you can consider involving someone who knows you well now as an adult. If you are not feeling able to involve someone else in your assessment our clinicians will do their best to work with you individually.
Step 4: Appointment & Report
At your face-to-face or online appointment your clinician will conduct an evidence-based assessment of Autism, such as using the MIGDAS, the ADI-R or the ADOS. Depending on the methods used, this typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours. Your clinician may sometimes be able to share their opinion on the day, but often they require to liaise with the multidisciplinary team first. They will then send you the report. The Assessment & Report is included in the fee. You can also book a follow up appointment if you wish to discuss results in person (with additional follow up fees – see fees here).
* You can also opt for a combined Autism & ADHD assessment. Visit our fees page for more information. Please kindly note if applying for NDIS on the basis of Autism, which people who present with Autism at level 2 & 3 may be eligible for; NDIS often require full functional capacity assessment which typically incurs an additional follow up session. NDIS often require supporting evidence from a third party in relation to the level of disability.

Please obtain a GP referral. Read here about the referral requirements for ADHD, which include blood tests, weight, height, pulse and blood pressure & for clients in WA only a urine drug screen.
- For under 18s you must please attend with a guardian.
- For adults, if possible, please make arrangements to bring a parent, carer, family friend or sibling who knew you in childhood to your appointment. We also understand that this isn’t possible for many people, in which case you can consider involving someone who knows you well now as an adult. If you are not feeling able to involve someone else in your assessment our clinicians will do their best to work with you individually.
Please kindly note for ADHD, to obtain Pharmaceutical Benefit Rebates for ADHD medication, the PBS require your clinician to have 3rd party evidence of childhood ADHD features, such as via school reports/ a letter from a family member about ADHD difficulties in childhood, a previous clinical report, or by someone who knew you before age 18 attending the appointment with you. Please kindly note this is an Australian wide regulation and not Kin Clinic clinicians’ decision.
Step 4: Appointment & Report
At your face-to-face or online appointment your clinician will conduct an evidence-based assessment of ADHD such as using the DIVA-5 Adult or Youth, the Conners or QB Check. Depending on the methods used, this typically takes 1 hour. Your clinician can sometimes share their opinion on the day, or they may liaise with the MDT, and will then send you the report. You can also book a follow up appointment if you wish to discuss results in person (at follow up fees see fees here).
Step 5: Follow Up
If you are settled on the first medication trialled, you may be discharged to the GP after 1-2 reviews for onward care and require annual review with Psychiatry. If you don’t respond to the first line of treatment you can continue follow ups to trial different ADHD medications until you feel settled on the optimum dose and type for you.
* You can also opt for a combined Autism & ADHD assessment. Visit our fees page for more information.
Adhd Medication Appointment At Kin Clinic With Existing Adhd Diagnosis From Another Clinic
This appointment type is designed for people who have had a previous diagnosis of ADHD following a full diagnostic assessment of ADHD at another clinic & is at a reduced fee compared to a new ADHD assessment.
Step 1: Eligibility
To access this service and prevent the need for full assessment, you must have a copy of the diagnostic report. The report must show use of an evidence based tool such as DIVA-5 or Conners by a qualified psychologist or psychiatrist and DSM-5 criteria stating the type of ADHD you were diagnosed with (Predominantly Inattentive, Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive, or Combined type). Please kindly note that Kin Clinic Reception staff are not able to contact clinics for you, due to confidentiality, the patient must ask for their information on their own behalf.
Step 2: Referral
Obtain a GP referral. Read here about the referral requirements for ADHD, which include blood tests, weight, height, pulse and blood pressure. For clients with cardiac problems, they must attend cardiology first for ECG and clearance to trial ADHD medications. Clients in WA only must provide a urine drug screen.
Step 3: Book
Once you have your referral, you can book here or call us to book with one of our psychiatrists or psychologists. You can choose your own clinician and opt for in-person or online options.
Step 4: Prepare
You will be sent an intake form.
- For under 18s you must please attend with a guardian.
- For adults, you can attend alone. However, please kindly note for ADHD, to obtain Pharmaceutical Benefit Rebates for ADHD medication, the PBS require your clinician to have 3rd party evidence of childhood ADHD features, such as via school reports/ a letter from a family member about ADHD difficulties in childhood, a previous clinical report, or by someone who knew you before age 18 attending the appointment with you. Please kindly note this is an Australian wide regulation and not Kin Clinic clinicians’ decision. If 3rd party collateral is already in your previous report then don’t worry this is already provided.
Step 5: Appointment, Letter & Script
At your face-to-face or online appointment your clinician will check they agree with the pre-existing diagnosis and check safety to prescribe. This will typically take 50 mins. You can then in the vast majority of cases be prescribed same day, however, if there is uncertainty in safety to prescribe or diagnosis clinicians reserve the right to suggest a further follow up (at follow up fees – see fees here). Reasons this may happen include, if there is Anorexia, low body weight, untreated Bipolar, Psychosis or a contraindication.
Step 6: Follow Up
If you are settled on the first medication trialled you may be discharged to the GP for onward care and require annual review with Psychiatry. If you don’t respond to the first line of treatment you can continue follow ups to trial different ADHD medications until you feel settled on the optimum dose and type for you.
General Mental Health Assessment With Psychiatry Or Nurse Practitioners
This is a new assessment of general mental health concerns, such as OCD, PTSD, addictions, psychosis, depression, anxiety conditions and personality difficulties. This does not include assessment of ADHD/ ASD, which are a separate appointment. This is due to the time and additional diagnostic measures involved.
Step 1: Referral
Obtain a GP referral. If you are looking for medication we recommend considering psychiatry or Nurse Practitioners as Psychologists cannot prescribe.
Step 2: Book
Once you have your referral, you can book here or call us to book with one of our psychiatrists or psychologists. You can choose your own clinician and opt for in-person or online options.
Step 3: Prepare
You will be sent an intake form.
- For under 18s you must please attend with a guardian.
- For adults, for complex cases, such as psychosis, Bipolar or substance use, we recommend you bring someone who knows you well to the appointment, as this can support the clinician’s diagnostic understanding. If you don’t feel able to do this you can also provide contact details for someone the clinician can reach out to.
Step 4: Appointment & Letter
At your face-to-face or online appointment your clinician will conduct an evidence-based assessment of your presenting difficulties. Depending on the methods used, this typically takes 1 hour. The general mental health assessment fee is for the first assessment appointment and letter. If the clinician has the correct expertise to help you may then be offered follow up appointments for treatment (at follow up fees – see fees here). Your clinician can sometimes share their opinion on the day, or they may liaise with the MDT, and will then send a letter to the GP and often to the patient also.
*** Please kindly note that usually only one assessment appointment is required, however, in highly complex cases such as if schizophrenia or where there is significant comorbidity, the clinician may need to speak to someone who knows you well, or ask for a second appointment at additional follow up fee to clarify.
