What does ADHD mean?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition affecting attention regulation, working memory, organisation, emotional regulation, and impulse control. Having an ADHD brain style can be associated with many positive attributes, including energy, creativity, high levels of passion for your interests, adventurousness and resilience.

ADHD without support or understanding can, however, result in cycles of restlessness, overwhelm, procrastination, task paralysis, or feeling unable to either stop or start tasks. This can lead people to feel frustrated they are unable to reach their goals or meet their potential.

Adults who have ADHD, may have difficulties completing tasks, maintaining focus, managing time, or sustaining motivation, which may affect work, study, relationships, and wellbeing. Seeking adult ADHD diagnosis and treatment in Australia can be an important first step toward understanding and managing these challenges.

There are three types of ADHD:

  • Combined Type ADHD, where your difficulties are with Inattention and Hyperactivity and Impulsivity.
  • Predominantly Inattentive ADHD where the difficulties for you are mostly inattentiveness, organising yourself, getting tasks completed, losing items or initiating tasks.
  • Predominantly Hyperactive Impulsive ADHD where your difficulties are mostly related to restlessness, fidgeting, hyperactivity physically and impulsive speech or behaviours that you may regret or find difficult to control.

How can Kin Clinic Help?

Our advanced adult ADHD assessment program provides assessment and treatment for adults experiencing difficulties with attention, organisation, focus, or impulse control. ADHD affects around 3% of adults. At Kin Clinic we take a neuroaffirmative approach, appreciating your unique strengths as a person who has ADHD, but also listening to you about any areas in which you may require supports. Our holistic ADHD program is designed to provide accurate adult ADHD diagnosis and treatment, personalised treatment planning, and ongoing support to improve your life and meet your goals.

What happens at Assessment?

Assessment takes place over 50 minutes to 1 hour and involves a structured clinical interview using evidence-based approaches such as the Diagnostic Interview for ADHD in addition to questionnaires. Your clinician aims to understand your developmental history, current strengths and difficulties, and screen for other conditions that may affect or better explain difficulties with attention or mood to make sure they provide the most accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.

Where feasible information from family members who knew you well as a child or someone who knows you well as an adult such as partners or friends, may be included to better understand symptoms across different life stages or settings. Your clinician will feedback in the session and provide a written report of the adult ADHD assessment with recommended holistic treatment options.

What are Treatment Options?

If a diagnosis is made of ADHD, treatment plans are tailored to each person’s needs and goals. Treatment is collaborative and your clinician may discuss with you medication management, psychological strategies to improve organisation and focus, emotional regulation strategies, and lifestyle approaches such as sleep optimisation, exercise, and routine development. Practical skills or reasonable adjustments for managing work, study, and daily responsibilities may also be indicated. Clinical studies suggest approximately 60–80% of patients experience meaningful improvement with comprehensive ADHD treatment for adults. We respect every person is unique in their needs and how they would prefer to engage in treatment.

When medication is recommended treatment is carefully initiated and monitored by Psychiatry and where appropriate with Nurse Practitioners, with follow-up reviews to identify the most effective medication and dose. Psychological and behavioural strategies are also used to improve executive functioning and everyday functioning, such as in collaboration with psychologists, occupational therapists, or other allied health professionals who may be recommended. Ongoing review appointments allow treatment to be adjusted as symptoms and life circumstances change.
